Top 5 Tips for getting into Summer Shape!

Hi everyone! I feel MIA the past few days with school. Been working extra hard to have free time for the weekend since it's the hubby's birthday Saturday (so excited!). Today I have such a treat for you! With summer just around the corner I asked my friend Danielle Pascente, a personal trainer who is in amazing shape, to share with us her Top 5 Tips for getting on a healthier path and staying on it! With husband's and my birthday this next week, we have been evaluating what we want to change for us in this new year of our lives and we both want to be healthier and more active. Danielle was sweet enough to not just give us short answers but really help us understand each of her tips so be sure to read through it all. It's really great! With out further adieu meet Danielle...

With summer right around the corner and those spring break plans fast approaching, you may be asking yourself, “How in the world am I going to get into swimsuit shape FAST.” Now of course my first response would be that being fit is a lifestyle change! When you are ready to fully commit yourself to that change….you won’t have to stress out about certain dates or times when you have to be in the best shape of your life. Unfortunately there is no easy three week fix, but there are a few things you can do to help speed up the process and feel svelte for that new bikini or onesie. Here are my TOP 5 quick tips to dialing in on that perfect swimsuit body ASAP!

WATER! This one is simple, yet many people find it very difficult to drink this much water throughout the day. The female daily intake of water should be 2.2 Liters or 9 cups. The male daily intake of water should be 3.0 Liters or 13 cups. Yes, that may seem like a lot of water, but if you can be sure that you are drinking that much a day…it will greatly help with digestion, hydration, and the normal progression of flushing things out of the body. If you aren’t used to drinking this much water, the first few days may be rough. You will feel full, bloated, and have to go to the bathroom a lot. Once your body gets used to it though, you will start to feel slimmer in the waste line.
CARDIO! Up your cardio during these few weeks. If you aren’t a cardio person, then try to find a cardio based class that you like. Ultimately, I recommend 45 minutes a day at least 4-5 days a week. Instead of the average steady state cardio, try to up your intensity level a bit. If you are a treadmill person, try interval walk/jog. 1 minute walking at 4.0 speed on a 2% incline, followed by 2 minutes running at 6.0-8.0 speed on a 1% incline. Repeat this pattern for 30-45 minutes. If you are an elliptical person, try this same pattern but up your resistance for 2 minutes, then bring it back down. So on and so forth for the bike, Stairmaster, or step mill. The most important thing is that you change it up! I want you to get on a different machine then you are used to every other day. If you are constantly changing it up, your body will never get used to that one motion. If you can swim, try an hour in the pool for max calorie burn. Pay attention to your calorie count on the machines. It is NOT always accurate! For max accuracy, you need to be using your whole body during the activity. No holding onto the handles or leaning on the front of the machine, but rather pumping your arms side to side without touching the machine AT ALL. There is nothing wrong with having a light grip on the handles as long as your whole body isn’t leaning on the machine. If you are a handle holder, just subtract 50-100 calories off your final calorie burn.
WEIGHTS! If you want those nice lines and perfect tone for your bikini, and you already have that cardio dialed down---pick up some light weights! I love high intensity interval training and a lot of body weight/light weight exercises. For this purpose, I love to refer people to the Nike Training Club app that you can get on your Iphone or Ipad. They have 20-40 minute weight and cardio workouts that suit every fitness level. If that isn’t enough, they have the actual videos on there to show you what the exercise should look like. Since this is a blog and I cannot be there to show everyone correct form, the NTC app is a great way to incorporate those weights into your regiment. I suggest picking 3 NTC workouts a week in addition to your cardio for max results. Cardio is great, but weights are just as important if not more important! With the high intensity interval training, your body will keep burning all day long and your metabolism will speed up and burn through food faster. If you cannot download the NTC app, try doing light weight/body weight activities. Things such as lunges, squats, bicep curls, tricep kick-backs, push ups, assisted pull ups, dips, etc. If you can easily do a 5lb weight, don’t be afraid to up your weight to 8 – 12 lb dumbbells.
NUTRITION! This subject area is very difficult to cover in a quick tip, but here are the basics. Overall you are going to want to eat lean and light in the coming weeks to slim down. Your diet should consist of a lot of leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, and lean protein like chicken, fish, egg whites, or beans. Stay away from red meats! You should try to eat carbs in the morning like oatmeal, or a protein/fiber filled cereal like Kashi Go Lean Crunch. Try to eliminate all simple carbs such as sugar, artificial syrups, white rice, white bread, white pasta, potatoes, pastries, and deserts! NONE OF THAT! The complex carbs are the ones you can eat. Things such as whole-wheat pasta, sprouted grain bread, and brown rice. Try to cut back on dairy a bit. If you are a whole milk, cheese, and yogurt person…cut back on just one of those. If you can switch your whole milk to almond milk (vanilla almond breeze is my favorite), then try it! If you can switch from regular yogurt to Greek yogurt…all the better! Greek yogurt is also chalk full of protein so you are getting more nutrients and feeling fuller. My most important tip is to just STAY AWAY from all desserts. The late night snacking can absolutely kill your waistline. Stay away from snack type chips/crackers (bad carbs), and reach for a healthy low calorie salt free rice cake with a tablespoon or less of peanut butter. Appropriate snacks will get you through this slim down period. Calories can absolutely add up just from snacks. Instead of crackers and cheese, M & M’s, Ice cream, etc….reach for these healthy options for mid-day pick me ups! Other things to avoid: Condiments! You can eat all of your calories through dressings and condiments. Stay away from all creamy dressings in general. No mayonnaise, ranch, cesar, dijon, etc. Instead try to replace with a tablespoon of olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. Another option is a tablespoon olive oil with fresh squeezed lemon. It is a super easy way to cut calories. If you like something with your chicken or tuna then I recommend pesto. Pesto is a great substitute mix with a lot of flavor! Salsa is another great low calorie way to dress your salad or chicken.
SLEEP, PATIENCE, CONSISTENCY (SPC). SPC is important to anyone trying to get serious about health, nutrition, and weight loss. I recommend 7-8 hours of sleep per night if not more. Your new workout regiment will leave you a bit more tired than usual, so there shouldn’t be any problem falling asleep. Once you get into bed, try shutting your brain completely off. Start with the hair on your head all the way down to your toenails. Relax every single part of your body and you are sure to fall asleep in 10 minutes or less. Getting enough sleep is imperative to your health and will be a fuel source to your workouts.

Be patient! You are going through a lot of changes just with these 5 quick tips. Let your body adjust to the changes. Try not to expect results in 5-6 days! It just won’t happen. You have to be patient with the process. Remember that what you are doing is ultimately a positive change, but can take some time. Focus on how you feel as opposed to how you look in the mirror. There is no such thing as QUICK results. You cannot undo a bad diet overnight. You have to create a lifestyle change and trim some of the fat in your life, whether it is diet or workout related. If you commit yourself 100% for three weeks, you will start to see changes. This does not however mean that after the three weeks you can go back to bad diet and lack of workout. Three weeks is just a good mark for you to evaluate how you feel. It’s a decent amount of time to try out the new foods and get rid of the bad foods. The first week or two could be extremely hard, but it will get better! After the three week mark, you can decide if you are ready to make a lifestyle change…and then you can continue on this health path.

Consistency is ultimately where your success lies. The more consistent you are with this, the better the results will be. I used to cheat 3 days a week on Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday. I always said to myself… “But I eat so clean and work out so hard during the week.” The only way I know how to rationalize this is to put it this way: 3 days a week= 12 days a month, which is almost 2 whole weeks out of the month that you are cheating! NO WONDER I WASN’T LOSING WEIGHT! To add to that, I would work out hard during the week when I was eating clean and I would take the weekend days off. Basically when I was going OVER my caloric intake on the weekends, I was also not burning any of that off. If you are going to cheat, make sure one of your hard workout days is the day after you cheat!

Start with these 5 tips, and you will be on track in no time!

Plain and simple, I had no weekend. I worked non-stop on homework while fighting being sick. I keep waiting for homework to ease up. But it just doesn't. On a positive note I woke up to this beautiful view Saturday morning while babysitting for friends...

Rendering (coloring) figures takes way. to. long. And it consumed way to much of my time this weekend. You wouldn't even believe how many hours I rendered this weekend if I told you.

I am hoping things ease up at school. I feel hopeful things will calm down this week. Please. Hope your weekend was actually a weekend with down time. Can't wait to watch Ben propose to Courtney on The Bachelor tonight and watch her say no. It's going to be great.

Dear Me,

Cut yourself some slack, you are so hard on yourself sometimes. I know you feel pressure more than you ever have as you financially put yourself through school full time and try to survive in the most expensive city in the country. It's not easy. But you are doing it. I know that second semester is known as that semester that is the hardest of them all at FIT, hang in there, May will be here soon. You had to start working this semester to help your family stay above water and I know it was the worse semester to have to start working but you will survive. People have managed much worse.

Try not to envy your friends who don't have to worry about money and get to just enjoy being a student. Your struggles will give you strength and build your character in ways that are priceless. And in the end, when you have reached your goals, you will look back at this time, reflect on these struggles and feel so much joy in what you have done because it wasn't easy getting there, but you did it.

Find comfort in knowing you are on Heavenly Father's path for you and he is happy with what you are trying to accomplish. He is with you, and for that reason, you cannot and will not fail.

And on a sweet note, be grateful you have a husband who appreciates all you are trying to do. Never forget his sweet gestures he does for you all the time to make you happy. Like last night when you came home after a 12 hour day of school and work, and he had dinner made for you with candles all around the apartment lit with rose petals everywhere just because he wanted to cheer you up. And to top it off he made you a chocolate shake. He's a keeper.

Stop feeling bad for yourself and get out there and tackle your challenges. You have been given so much and you can do it.

Subway Stampede

I was in a stampede yesterday morning. Seriously. Let me explain. Every day when I go to school I have at least four to five different boxes/bags/pattern paper rolls/slopers to take to class. It's heavy, uncomfortable, and always awkward to carry; especially in crowded subways.

Then yesterday, just after I got off the subway, and got through the turnstile, a fear of mine came to past. At least fifty or so of my markers went spilling everywhere in the middle of what seemed to be a stampede of commuters. I quickly jumped down to try to save my markers that were being kicked every which way by everyone who was to busy to help me. These markers average $5 a marker, so losing them is not an option. It was a nightmare to say the least. One of my scariest moments in NYC yet.

I am happy to report all my markers were recovered and despite spilling my markers in the middle of a subway stampede, I had a really great productive day at school.

Surviving a stampede can be checked off the bucket list now.

Mood Fabrics

I spend so much time at Mood. You will find me swatching fabrics regularly there for class and buying fabric for all my projects. This weekend I finally introduced husband to my other home. Now he understands how I spend hours in there every time I go, so many fabrics to choose from, it takes a while! It's my little hectic heaven. I just love it and all the endless possibilities!

The staff is so friendly and helpful every time I go in, it's great. And if you are lucky, you will see their cute dog, Swatch. If you need fabric check Mood out in person or online. They are great!

This weekend I gave myself much needed me time. Slept in with the hubs, made breakfast in bed, got a much needed mani/pedi and finally went shopping with some gift cards I have had forever. You know I am busy when a gift card stays in my purse longer than a week. This semester has been so busy already and I finally said enough! I needed time to myself to relax and recharge my batteries. I feel like a whole new person! I'm not ready for it to be Monday yet, but at least The Bachelor is on tonight, that always makes Mondays better. Who is watching?!

A few months back, Amina from Some Like It Classic, asked to borrow my dress Ronde de Jambe for a photo shoot that her and several others were collaborating on for TheKnot.com. I was so honored she asked me to be apart of it! The dress had to be over nighted to her and I had to stay up late getting my sample looking perfect, but it was worth it! The beautiful Alicia Blanco, former Ms. Arizona and 2nd runner up for Ms. USA 2009, was the model and she rocked my dress!

It's moments like these, when I see all my hard work before me, on a gorgeous model, in a beautiful photo, that I step back and am reminded of why I do what I do. I love it. Designing and making garments is my passion. While I have put my dresses on a back burner while I am in school, I am grateful to be reminded of how sweet the reward is for all the hard work I am doing in school.

All the late nights, the endless homework, the sore fingers that are pricked and cut more times than I can count. All the hours and hours spent sketching, draping, patternmaking, and then sewing and sewing, all comes back to helping me reach my goal of someday making the most gorgeous clothes (not just bridal) for you.

Life is good.

New Obsession: Jump Roping

It's a great work out. I first became interested in jump roping when I was a bridal consultant in LA. I had a bride there that lost 120 pounds (yes a 120 pounds!) by just jump roping for her work outs. She did it every day for 20 minutes. And let me tell you, she was toned all over her body from it!

(don't you love my cute faces I make while I work out? not.)

I have intensified my work outs lately by jump roping in between my sets. With summer just around the corner my fitness bug is growing. If you want to step up your work outs, try jump roping. It's a great work out! Okay, I am off to my sewing class now. Starting our suit jackets today. Have a good day friends!

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies. Seriously.

It's no secret that James and I are little cookie monsters. Chocolate chip being our favorite. I have been trying to master the chocolate chip cookie with the right fluffiness and sweet goodness for a long time. Then this weekend, it happened. I mastered it! And since I am not one to keep my recipes a secret here it is...

3 2/3 Cups Flour (minus 2 tablespoons)

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 cup packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 eggs

The chocolate chip amount is up to you but I did about 7 hand fulls.

Don't separate the dry ingredients like they suggest you do. Put everything into the bowl in the order I listed it and mix it as you go. It's the best way, trust me! Heat your oven to 375 and bake for about 11-12 minutes. And then you will have the world's best chocolate chip cookies! Let me know if you try it!

The One Room Challenge: Hanging the T.V.

Good morning friends! I am a day behind on my One Room Challenge (opps!) husband and I celebrated our "dating" anniversary last night and that took priority! But today I am here to catch up!

After I finished painting our new dresser we were left with this...

I really wanted the T.V. to be mounted on the wall with NO wires showing! It was expensive to hire an electrician so James was Mr. Handy Man and did it himself! He did great...

Then it was up...

Next came time to decorate the top. I wanted a cute little lamp for it and ventured to Target to find one. It came between these two...

And then it was all complete and we are in love with it! Hanging the T.V. made us feel like we got a whole new T.V. We love watching shows on it!!

And I just love those frames my Grandmother gave me when I went to visit her this summer. They are my favorite!

Next week we will be revealing the rest of the renovations to the room, a change in pillows, and an entire video tour of our apartment! It will be our own version of Cribs!

My Funny Valentine

I had a different post planned for today. Then I got really busy this ~~morning~~ all day with school and couldn't post it. I am so glad that happened. Because when I came home from a sweet lunch date with my Valentine, Mr. Hartley totally surprised me with this...

He pulled out memorabilia of us since we started dating and sweet Valentine cards from years past. So sweet. I was totally surprised. And it takes a lot for me to be surprised. Good job Mr. Hartley! Some of my favorites...

I love that we are each others. Mine.

When James and I started "talking" we were long distance. This is his plane ticket from when he surprised me and flew to California to take me out on a date after we had been "talking" for a week.

We have been together ever since.

I love being his Mrs. And Forever 21.

I love my funny Valentine! Tomorrow marks our "dating anniversary." Most people don't celebrate this once they are married but since it falls the day after V-day I make us celebrate both. For our four year anniversary tomorrow I surprised James with really good seats to a Knicks game so he can watch his favorite player, Jimmer from the Kings, play the Knicks. We are so excited!

Happy Valentine's/Four Years together my love. We always knew we would end up happily married to each other. I love you!

What I Love About Taylor - By Husband

Happy Valentines Week! This is James, Taylor's husband talking. Since Valentine's Day is coming up I can express my true lovey dovey feelings without worrying about the integrity of my manhood! I love this girl more than anything and the second I met her is when everything in my life came together... she completes me...cheesy but true.

So here are a FEW things I LOVE about her! There are MANY more but I am trying to keep it short since it's a blog post, not a book.

A spot for everything - She is a great organizer and keeps our apartment clean & organized to the point that sometimes I need a mini orientation with her when I forget little things like which way the handle on our hot chocolate mugs faces or if the hair spray goes to the left or right side of the lotion. It's adorably specific!

2. Don't do the laundry! - I tried to help her fold laundry once right after we got married, and she yelled at me to stop because she liked doing it. She actually LIKES to do it.. don't have to tell me twice.

3. She Likes me! ... No, she "Like Likes" me. I can't figure out why, for the life of me, but I am not going push it. I am perfectly happy with her illusion! ...Oh and I "like like" her back...

4. She lets me creep on her: creepy but true - Sometimes (and by that I mean every single morning) I stare at her because I honestly love her so much and she is adorable. Also when when she is walking, eating, watching tv, cooking, sitting, standing, talking, and not talking... I creep on her. But that's ok because I am bound to her for eternity, so I think that's ok. I think it's one of the perks that comes along with promising your forever to someone...

5. Trophy Wife! - ok, I know. That's a shallow male perspective... But I don't care! I love it! She is gorgeous!

6. Haha! - She is funny! She makes me laugh a lot. And it's not the courteous, "have to laugh to be nice or for flirting purposes" kind of laugh. She straight up cracks me up... and it's hilarious!

7. Get it? - She does. She gets me. I don't have to explain things to her. She just understands. She knows! We communicate on a higher level... Sometimes we use words too, but mostly just subtle eye movements and eyebrow twitches.

8. BFF - She is my greatest friend. I love hanging out with her.

9. Cooking: Or should I say cookie-ing - Either way she cooks great meals and great desserts. Since being married I have never eaten so many healthy meals and vegetables... I have also never eaten so make cookies and brownies. So I think it evens out right?

10. Dance! - Sure Taylor was a professional dancer in LA and appeared in a Miley Cyrus music video, danced for Nike in Vegas, and did numerous other gigs as a dancer, but I am not talking about that. It's her "I won" dance that she does that melts my heart. When she beats me at a game or discovers she's right and I'm wrong, she does it... Occasionally when we are both excited about something, I will join her...and it is a joyous occasion.

(In case your wondering what that looks like... Point your two index fingers in the air. Bend your elbows and straighten it with your fingers pointing toward the sky. Alternate your right and left arms whilst marching in place with your knees in an out-word motion. Do all this while grinning ear to ear adorably... I'll get her to do it on camera some time... )

Happy Friday lovelies! I am so ready for the weekend, and to kick it off, I want to introduce you to one of my cute NYC girlfriends & neighbors, Jenna, from Mommy in Manhattan.

She is one of my favorite people I have met since moving to NYC and has the cutest family in the world. How adorable are her kids?

She makes raising kids in the city look easy. You will often find Jenna on the street with her double wide stroller and little Davis on his razor scooter next to her running errands around the city. I find her so inspiring, she makes me want to raise a family in the city. I will let her take it away but be sure to check her blog out and send some love her way!

A Sweet Love Letter

Husband and I thought it would be fun to leave love notes for each other in this little $1 mailbox from Target. The other day I came home to this sweet letter that reminded me that four years ago on that day we talked on the phone for the very first time. To be honest I didn't even know that was the day it all started. I love that he remembered. And as he said, the rest was history.

Remember my little hidden treasure I found in my Aunt's garage? This was it before...

I knew I wanted to paint it a high gloss white...

With cute knobs from Anthropologie on it. We scored these knobs on sale for only $2.95, regularly $10 each. I never see their knobs on sale at Anthro. I was thrilled!

Then after long hours of sanding and painting..

It was done!

Can't wait to show you how beautiful our flat screen looks hanging above it (with no wires showing! Husband did a great job!)

Fortune Cookie

I have an interesting relationship with fortune cookies. They are always so dead on for me that it's even comical at times (more on that later). After a long and deep conversation with husband about our future and where we see things going for Taylor Morgan and our life in general, I was feeling a little overwhelmed. Then the next night at dinner I got this fortune. It was a tender mercy reminding me that a determined heart is a powerful thing. So powerful that it can actual scare away your problems. I felt an instant peace and strength after reading this. Let's all remember this week to strengthen our determination and by doing so eliminate our problems and fears. Go get it!

FIT this week

I have almost completed my first week back at FIT for the new semester. After an amazing semester last fall, I thought it would be hard to top. But, oh. my. gosh! FIT just keeps getting better and better. I can't believe how amazing my Professors are this semester. I really lucked out!

One on the top of my list is my sewing Professor. He is a 75 year old Italian straight up from Italy. I cannot express how excited I am to have a European sewing instructor, especially one from Italy. Jackpot! He started sewing at the age of 5 and is so talented it's unreal. When asked if he made his jacket he laughed with the cutest smile and said in the thickest italian accent "I make all my pants and jackets. Why wouldn't I? I do it the best."

Words cannot express how great FIT and the Professors there are. I am so grateful to be studying there. Thank you FIT for shaping me into the designer I need to be. I love you.

The One Room Challenge: A Hidden Treasure

Welcome back to The One Room Challenge, where myself and 14 other bloggers have joined together to challenge ourselves to re-do one room in our homes (or in my case an itty bitty studio apartment!) in six weeks. This week I am sharing with you my treasure hunt.

Ever since we moved to NYC last summer, I had my eye out for that perfect antique dresser that I wanted to redo for our living room to go under our T.V. I had an image in my mind but couldn't find it. Well truth be told, I actually found it week one of living in NYC, in my Aunt's garage of all places. But it was so cute I never thought she would part with it. Luckily for me, not only was she willing to part with it but she just let us have it for free! (Thanks Aunt Kare!)

So in this cute garage...

I fell in love with this sweet little ~~dresser~~ sideboard that had so much potential...

I decided it was mine...

But first made husband clean off all the spider webs & dried up eggs
(eww!! I really couldn't look!)...

And then drove it back into the city (such a luxury!) to go to it's new home...

Then I quickly went to work...

Rubber kitchen gloves and all! But more on that later..

Shake Shack

Shake Shack is to NYC what In'n'Out is to the West Coast. But a little fancier. New Yorkers love this place and will wait in crazy lines just to get it.

Last night we went to dinner there with some friends. And it was delicious!

Shake Shack is known for their frozen custard but if you are like me and just like a good old chocolate shake, then I recommend ordering a black white instead of the chocolate shake. Their "chocolate" shake isn't nearly as good, trust me!

I also recommend asking for your meat to be cooked well done because otherwise it will taste under cooked (And this is coming from a girl who loves her steaks bloody usually!). And be sure to get a Shack Burger! They are the best!

If you are in the city be sure to make a stop to Shake Shack. It's a fun place to eat. While I think it's good, this West Coast girl still prefers In'n'Out. But Shake Shack will have to do!

Back to School

After six glorious weeks off from school, today is my first day back to FIT for the spring semester. I really enjoyed my time off, I worry I am to use to it. But on the other hand I love having a set schedule and being busy. I get more done when I am busy, anyone else feel like that?!

Here's to hoping this semester is just as great as the last with amazing Professors. I just hope to stay on top of everything now that I am working in my new bridal store. Wish me luck!

City Life: The Pros & Cons

Pro: Having fun things like this at Target.

Con: Having to carry heavy groceries home from the store, to the subway, to your apartment, in the rain. Sweet.

Con: Needing to go to five different stores to get all the groceries & household items you need, but Pro: having companies like FreshDirect to make your life so much easier. Delivered groceries are the best.

Pro: Having the best restaurants around. Carmine's, one of my favorites...

Con: Schlepping stuff up to storage on the train. Never easy. All day task.

Pro: Getting to go to Grand Central Station every time we take stuff up to storage. So pretty.

Pro: Waking up to this site every morning...

and going to bed to this site every night...

Con: Never being able to find flowers that stay alive for longer than two days.

Pro: Having the best TJ Maxx around. Still wish I had bought these shoes.

Con: Having brown as the primary color for eggs on the East coast. Pro: they don't freak me out anymore.

Pro: Being able to walk to halls of FIT everyday. Dream come true. I love my school.

Pro: Walking by famous places everyday. New York Stock Exchange & Trinity Church. Love the history here in NYC.

Con: Not having enough room in your apartment for home projects. And looking like a hot mess while you do them.

Pro: Not owning a car. Seriously. As annoying as errands can be without one, not needing a car is the best, I love taking the train. Preferably the 1 or 2.

Number One Pro: Knowing NYC is our home. It's so fun and exciting and never gets boring. All the pros more than out weigh the cons. We love our city. It feels like home.

The One Room Challenge: Pillows

I wanted to make pillows for our couch and ottoman to add color to our place. Our apartment is all white for the most part and I needed my pillows to be pops of color. I decided to go shopping at one of my favorite fabric stores in the city, the famous Mood Fabrics. After hours of shopping I picked these four...

Then I went to work...

Even turned pillow making into a girl's night at my girlfriend Kimber's place...

And in the end there were four...

Reflecting

Last night I was reflecting on everything. NYC, friends, family, things I have done, dreams. It takes a lot to go after what you really want in life. Unfortunately, not many people go after their dreams. And I have found it's not because they don't have courage to, but rather they don't know where to start. It feels overwhelming, which can paralyze you from doing anything.

Even though I am trying my hardest to go after my dreams, I too feel overwhelmed from time to time. Last night I felt that a bit. For me I have made so many big changes in the past seven months and I love them, but change isn't always easy. The hardest part for me is not having close friends by. Like your real friends who just get you and support you in everything. Then I watched this video from when I launched Taylor Morgan and was reminded why Heavenly Father brought us to NYC. I instantly felt better...

At the end of the day I know Heavenly Father's plan for me. And no matter what's going on I have to keep moving forward in faith. We all do. Faith is what gets us up in the morning. If you find yourself not knowing where to go next or what that next step should be for you than fake it til you make it! Just go for it. Whatever it is. Sometimes you reach what's realist by making believe. Don't let the unknown stop you, just dive in. You will learn as you go and eventually find yourself.

Hello Monday!

Sweater: Forever21

I practically lived in this sweater this weekend. It was chilly here in the city. I finally woke up to a winter wonderland on Saturday. I loved it and want more snow. Please NYC?

Most of my weekend was spent at my new bridal store styling brides. It was so pretty to see the snow falling outside behind the dresses. I haven't officially announced my new part time job, but I am working as a bridal stylist again on 5th ave. I love it. If you are in the area come shopping with me!

After a long day in the bridal store, husband took me on a date to Times Square. We went to dinner and rode the Ferris Wheel in Toys'R'Us. It was really fun...

We are dorks, I know. And I am pretty sure we were the only ones riding it without kids. Sweet.

The rest of the weekend was spent snuggling on our couch with our new ottoman watching tv and relaxing. Family time is my favorite. This is my last week of freedom. I start classes at FIT again on Monday and my schedule is FULL. Now I am off to enjoy this last week of freedom.

The One Room Challenge

A few weeks ago I was asked to participate in "The One Room Challenge" with fourteen other bloggers. The challenge is to re-do one room in our house for six weeks and share the progress as we go.

Husband teased me when I was asked to do this because we live in a studio apartment in NYC (aka a tiny apartment). He said "do they know you only have one room?" But that didn't stop me from wanting to re-do a "side" of our 500 square foot apartment. So I accepted the challenge! How I ended up among all these talented interior designers I will never know, but this fashion designer was happy to join in on the fun!

I have actually been wanting to re-do our living room for quite some time but never could because of school and funds. So for Christmas most of my gifts had to do with gift cards to furniture stores and such. This was our living room when we moved in this past summer...

It was a hot mess. It took weeks just to organize it. Among all this chaos I decided I wanted to paint stripes (husband was not happy at the time, he wanted stuff to just be done). So all by myself I managed to pull this off...

After that things kind of came to a stop. Our room was far from what I wanted. Things I wanted to do:

Buy an ottoman.

New dresser (preferably an antique I could re-do) to put under the T.V.

Hang our T.V. on the wall (with NO wires showing!)

Make colorful/fun pattern pillows for our white couch. This place could use color.

Paint side wall that meets with the stripe wall, solid grey.

Buy new lamp for the living room.

And maybe a cute new throw blanket for the couch.

So after the holidays I went to work. First stop was shopping at IKEA for a lot of things I wanted. Luckily my mom and sister were in town at the time and helped me out a lot! (thanks girls!)

In NYC you have to take a free ferry to get to IKEA because it's across the water in Brooklyn. It's actually really fun. You pass the Statue of Liberty on the way so it's a fun little adventure. I always love taking it.

Every Wednesday I will be blogging about the progress of my room. There are lots of fun things to see and DIY projects! I can't wait to show you everything! Be sure to check out the other "One Room Challenge" ladies...

MAC Makeup Recycle Program

Did you know you can get a free (yes free!) lipstick from MAC every time you recycle your old MAC products? Maybe it's something everyone knows, but I thought I should share it with you just in case you are missing out on free stuff! And if your a MAC-oholic like me than you will love this...

The rules for recycling are simple, it needs to obviously be a MAC product you are done using and plastic. Six is the magic number. 6 recycled products = 1 free lipstick of your choice. That's the best part, because you can try any lipstick your little heart desires.

I am not a pink type of girl, but after being inspired by my cute girlfriend Courtney, I wanted to give it a try. So I went with "Girl About Town." I am really excited to wear this lipstick out around town myself!

I love style icon, Daphne Guinness' new ads for MAC. She looks stunning. This past semester in the FIT Museum we had a Daphne Guinness exhibit of her personal clothes. They were over the top outrageous and amazing. If you don't know her be sure to look this fashion icon up. Lady Gaga gives her credit for a lot of her style inspiration (Daphne is the original here!).

Undivided husband/wifey time all weekend. Highlight!

Finding your laundry card (that your Mom so kindly put a lot of money on when she was in town) after you thought you lost it. Score.

Realizing that scarf you bought (in pics) just because you thought it was cute, actually serves a purpose as the temperature is dropping more and more here in the city. #winternewbie

Having your groceries delivered to your front door.

Burning Christmas candles still because they smell good and you can.

Being reminded that God really does hear and answer our prayers.

Being surprised with your favorite flowers "just because."

Realizing that it is still the weekend because of the holiday today!

Taylor Morgan Swim Suit Collection

This past semester at FIT, we had to design a swimwear collection that was inspired by an abstract piece of art we liked. I searched and searched and finally came across a painting by Casey Leigh. I knew I wanted my collection to be retro and Casey's painting was a perfect fit...

I just loved the colors. We were only allowed to use 3-4 colors which I found as a challenge at first, but quickly realized that it was better that way. You want your collection to feel that it goes together with each other. The more colors you add, the more unity you lose between the pieces.

The top picture is of my favorite colors from Casey's painting, but I had to narrow it down. Putting a "window" around the colors (like I did in the below picture) really helps you to see if your stories make sense together. I loved these four together and planned to use the teal as my accessories color.

Next I sketched out my ideas as flats so that I could sketch quickly a lot of ideas before putting my favorites onto fashion croquis'. I had to pick three that were different yet looked like they went together. Boning under the bust and ruching in the skirts were a common theme with cute bow belts and button details.

Next was the hardest part, choosing colors for each suit. This is a very important step that can take hours. I had initially loved the red but it wasn't working for me on the girls. It was to harsh with the other colors and didn't maintain the retro vibe I was going for. So it got the axe. I stuck with the soft pink, mustard and black with teal for accessories.

Then my girls were born...

Who knows, Taylor Morgan Design may just be making swimwear someday?!

Something wonderful happened over here on Wall Street, TJ Maxx moved in and I welcomed them with open arms (and wallet!). I am always one for a bargain (I think it's an Aries thing) and TJ Maxx always fills my bargain junkie fix!

Right now I am loving my new leopard scarf and chic geek glasses from there. I think leopard scarfs are a must have that can be worn year round. It's an easy way to spice up any outfit. And every girl should have a pair of chic geek glasses for when we want our inner nerd to shine.

A Sweet Surprise

Our family loves to surprise each other in big ways. This year my ten year old sister, Avery, was the one being surprised. My Mom and sister drove with us to the airport to say "good bye" but little did Avery know that they were coming back with us to NYC for a full week! Her reaction was priceless...

The day after Christmas my Mom and little sister flew back with us to NYC for a full week (sister didn't know she was coming until we were saying "good bye" at the airport! video coming soon!) It was great! Felt like I was even on vacation in my own city.

it's a new year and I'm feeling good

Happy New Year friends! It's going to be a great one, best one to date, I can just feel it! This year I am going to:

Not get angry. No one can make us mad and I am choosing not to get mad this year.

Get ready every morning. Sometimes I get lazy (especially being married) but I always feel better when I get dolled up.

Serve others consistently. Try to think of at least one person everyday that I can help make their day better. Even if it's just in a small way.

Maintain 3-5 days a week at the gym. I love working out!

Eat less sweets. I have such a sweet tooth.

I feel so good. And what better way to jump start the new year than with one of my favorite shows, The Bachelor...

This has to be their best promo clip to date. They know what we love and they gave it to us! Last night was the season premiere and oh. my. gosh. we have got some crazies on our hands! I actually kind of feel bad for Ben, there seems to be a lot of crazies and not enough winners. But maybe that is actually a good thing, it may help him easily see the good ones. Everyone is talking about how crazy Jenna (the crier above) is but I think Courtney (beautiful model below) is the villain to look out for. She is crazy.

How evil is her laugh? She reminds me of Ursula from The Little Mermaid when she turns beautiful. Watch out Ben, she is bad news!

Anyone else love Bachelor as much as I do? Such a guilty pleasure.

I have been MIA the past two weeks with finals at FIT. Pulling all nighters several nights in a row and getting ready to leave for Christmas. Holidays Hartley Style

Thanksgiving weekend was beyond amazing. Probably my favorite yet. Lots of food, lots of hubby/wifey time, lots of down time, what more could you ask for? We went up to my Aunt and Uncle's upstate for Thanksgiving day and it was amazing! Then we made our own Thanksgiving dinner the next day (for the leftovers!) followed by the start of Christmas decorating!

Rejuvenated and Running!

FIT Owns Me

Life? What life? All I do is sew my days away. Especially now that it's the end of the year, all my term garments are in full swing. This week my draping teacher told us on Tuesday to hand baste (hand sew) our ENTIRE dress by Friday, today. I timed how long it took me to do just the skirt, over 20 hours. Hand sewing is so slow. And of course I never design the easier things to make. If you need to learn patience, hand sew a whole dress in three days. Worst part is today we did fittings on our mannequins and I have to re-do about 12 hours worth on the skirt. Yuck.

Despite the craziness I really love my school. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time it's unbelievable. I need some down time this weekend. I don't want to do much other than go see the new Twilight movie (guilty!) and put up Christmas decorations. Have a good weekend everyone!

A year ago today I was forever changed.

I was in Los Angeles this day last year in rehearsal for a Nike show I was dancing in. Little did I know this day would forever change me. In rehearsal I dislocated three discs in my back, causing me the most pain I have ever felt in my life.

I wish I could say that a year later I am healed, but I'm not. I am however much better than I was then. After I got injured I danced injured for a week with it because 1. I didn't know how bad it was and 2. I kind of didn't want to know how bad it was because I didn't want to miss out on dancing for Nike.

After I came home from Nike I was in such bad shape that I woke up every time I moved while I was sleeping because the pain was that bad. I couldn't even dress myself for weeks and if it wasn't for James I don't know how I would have gotten through so much.

This injury has made me appreciate and respect my body so much more. Dancers are always so hard on their bodies and I took for granted what I had. I have missed dancing more than I can tell you. I have tried class a few times but it's always frustrating not being where you usually are. I will get there, it takes time. And the biggest thing I have learned is patience. Respect your bodies my friends! They are so great but so fragile! Today I will leave you with an old dance reel of mine. It's a little cheesy but it will do. NYC Neat Freak

I have something new and exciting to share with you today. But before I do, let me give you a little background. Most people don't know this about me but I am a total neat freak. I literally know where every single thing (no matter how big or small) is in my apartment. The Container Store is one of my favorites and I have to avoid it if I want money in my bank account. I label just about everything. Husband makes fun of me for windexing our trash can, but it's silver, how could I not?! And quite often I will go on midnight cleaning sprees. While being clean is a great thing it is also a curse. I cannot and will not sew, sketch or do any draping/patternmaking without my home in tip top shape. And guess what, I have to do all those things everyday, so I clean a lot.

When people walk into my apartment for the first time they always say without fail "your place is so clean!" Best compliment ever. Lately I have had some friends ask me to organize for them and I have loved helping them. But it's made me think, maybe I should make a little business out of this. And so I did. Let me introduce you to NYC Neat Freak, a full service professional organizing company!

I am in love with my girl I sketched above. I think she is adorable if I do say so myself! The website is up but has a long ways to go. Spiritual Silence in NYC

It's no secret that NYC is always very loud at any hour of the day or night. We hear construction outside our window until 1 or 2 am most nights. Eventually you get use to it. However, now NYC has a very special place where it truly is silent. All you hear are waterfalls flowing into the deep foundations that once held the World Trade Towers. Yes, I am speaking of the 9/11 memorial. We went last weekend and it was so amazing. To feel the spirit so strong and quiet in the middle of a big noisy city was incredible. If you come to the city you must go. You will be so glad you did.

If you wish to go to the memorial be sure to book your tickets in advance. It's free to go but you have to have a ticket because it is still a construction site so they have to monitor how many people come in a day. We booked ours in September and couldn't go until the end of October so book early if you know you are coming! Happy Tuesday friends!

Just Kick It!

So I thought I was going to be really good at blogging this week. I have all these fun things to share with you, but life happened and I have barely had time to breathe. You know those weeks when you feel like you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders? Well that is how I feel this week. I am not going to lie, it's been rough but happy but sad and scary. However, we are pushing through our trial and trying to stay positive and faithful. The good thing is I feel myself and James growing. Heavenly Father is pushing our faith and trust in him to a whole new level. I don't think God gives us anything we can't handle, and I feel honored that he trust me enough to push my faith this hard. It's all going to be ~~good~~ great. I will tell you more about it someday, I am just waiting for the happy ending first so you can see how miracles happen everyday.

I talked to one of my closest friends Henry this week. Henry is like my big older brother. He is so wise and always gives me great advice. Anyways we have a long outstanding inside joke (to understand the joke you have to know that I am also a professional dancer). One time when I was going through another hard trial, Henry came over to talk to me about it. He told me to bare my testimony in church and say "Hi brothers and sisters, my name is Taylor and I learned that when life gets hard you have to just kick it!" (insert Henry pretending to kick his leg up to his head like the picture above). Oh it makes me laugh! You probably had to be there but it was so funny. It's even on video. But I swore to never share it. But I just love when good friends cheer you up. Henry put that picture above on my facebook wall last night and I instantly felt better. I love good friends! I have to say I have been blessed with some of the most amazing friends. Only problem is they are all on the west coast. Bummer.

Happy Halloween from NYC!

This is the first year that doesn't really feel like Halloween for us. I am not sure why, we finally live in a state with all four seasons so it really should feel like Halloween but it doesn't. Maybe it's because we didn't dress up this year and carve pumpkins. I am sad about the pumpkins.

But one thing we did that felt Halloween/fallish is go apple picking the other weekend. I just got called in to the young women's program in my Church. So the other weekend we took the young women (and young men) upstate to go apple picking. It was gorgeous! And since we slacked in Halloween spirit this year I thought these pictures would be appropriate to make up for it today...

Fun Fact: The brown jacket I am wearing was my little brother's when he was 4 years old. It's from Gap kids. Does that count as vintage?!

Real Taylor Morgan Bride

One of my favorite things about my job is to get pictures from my bride's weddings. I always love seeing how my creations looked on them for their big day. My jaw about dropped when I received pictures this week from my bride Sepideh. Oh. my. gosh! She was stunning! Sepideh bought the "Avery" veil from me and made it look so amazing. She was on the fence about doing no trim or lace trim on her veil and I am so glad she went with the lace. It really completed her look...

A NYC Must-Do

There is so much to do in NYC, but one thing that is a must-do while visiting the city is going to the world famous Serendipity for dessert! Your mouth will thank you for the treat! Their frozen hot chocolate is amazing and very popular. But our personal favorite is the Forbidden Broadway Sundae. Oh it's heavenly...

The wait is usually long at Serendipity no matter what day or time it is (usually at least an hour wait). But while you wait you can visit the adorable Dylan's Candy Bar just down the street.

Dylan is Dylan Lauren. As in Raplh Lauren's daughter. She is like a modern day Willy Wonka. Her store is every kid's dream and no detail is over looked. It's fun to look around her candy land...

Between Serendipity and Dylan's Candy Bar, it won't be the healthiest night of your life but it is so worth it!

Stranger on the Subway

When I got on the subway to go to school this week, there was an elderly, homeless looking man who wouldn't stop staring at me. You know when you catch someone staring at you how they typically will look away? Not this man! He stared and stared and stared and stared at me until I was beyond uncomfortable. I tried to pretend like it wasn't happening but it was only getting worse. It felt like he was 2 inches away from my face just looking at me.

He then precedes to pull out a blank pad of paper. Then it hits me, he is going to draw me! This is going to be awkward because no words have been spoken. Sure enough he starts to sketch me. What do I do? Sit there and look at him on a busy subway? Look away and pretend it's not happening? I decided to just hold still and not move. My discomfort paralyzed me anyways. At least at this point I felt better knowing he was staring at me for a reason.

Then comes the low blow. As I am getting off at my stop he actually gives me the sketch, which I thought was nice of him. Nice, until I saw it that is. To my horror this is what the stranger on the subway thinks I look like...

When did I get chipmunk cheeks, become old and lose my bangs? This picture is really depressing.

Husband thinks this sketch from a stranger is hi.lar.i.ous. He keeps putting it on our fridge and I keep taking it down. At least it makes for a good story. Thanks stranger on the subway for trying to draw me. I appreciate your efforts but next time a picture will do just fine. Oh, never a dull moment in the city!

On Saturday husband and I went to The Met to check out Lucian Freud's exhibit. The Met is so beautiful and is full of gorgeous treasures. We really loved it. Freud's exhibit was really amazing. I didn't know how I would feel about it since it was nude portraits but they were beautiful. He was so talented. The Met is a must stop if you are in NYC.

My school, The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) prohibits photographs anywhere on campus. Which bums me out cause there is so much I wish I could share with you. But yesterday I was loving this view of mine to much while I was working on some homework and listening to Adele, so I snapped this with my phone. Isn't it just lovely? It feels very New York. Unless you have been to NYC you probably won't understand. I love the feeling of old NYC and fashion studios. And the touch of rain yesterday made it all that much better. Love.

Visitors

NYC gets a lot of tourist. And with all the tourist that come you are bound to have friends or someone you know in town at least every other week (sometimes it feels like every week!). This past week was a busy one for us. We had three different groups of friends come in. Mix that with school and a fashion show I worked this weekend and things get pretty busy...

First up were Katie and Todd from Las Vegas. I just love them. Last year I was in Vegas for almost two weeks for a dance job and they took me around town so now it was my turn. I wish I didn't have school while they were here but we all got to go to Little Italy one night for a yummy dinner!

Next Tory and Adam came in from Boston. I ended up having to work last minute and could only hang out at night but we still had a lot of fun. They are so sweet and spoiled James and I with way to much. We love our friends.

Last, but certainly not least, one of my most favorite people in the world, Marcea, came into town for a fashion show for her self named label. Marcea is a dancewear and costume company. Growing up I always wore and loved her clothes and when I was 18 I met Marcea when I started modeling for her. She is amazing! And has taught me so much. It was so much fun working for her this weekend. The top left picture is from the last catalog I did for her in 2009.

For those not in the dance world, Marcea is a very well known dancer who has done so much in her career. One of her most famous gigs was as a dancer for Michael Jackson in the famous "Thriller" music video. How fun is that? Above is a picture of her (to the right of Michael) in the video.

Low High (with a treat at the end!)

My family has a long standing game we play called "Low High." It's pretty self explanatory, you say your low and high of the day and the rule is you always have to end on a positive note with your high. This week has been very busy (hence the lack of blogging). So busy that I am blogging at 2 am right now. But I just couldn't let another day go by without saying hi to all of you! I thought the easiest way to catch you up on my week would be to share my lows and highs. Let's play shall we?

Lows:

- having to draw my first male model in my life drawing class (yes it's a nude drawing class, yikes! my poor innocent eyes!)

- ordering chinese food only because I was craving the crunchy chips with sweet & sour sauce, then finding they delivered everything but that. serious let down.

- living right next to Wall Street with all the hippies still protesting. drums day and night.

- not having my driver license on me when the hippies were out protesting and having to walk several extra blocks to get home because of it. Guess I didn't learn my lesson from the 9.11 anniversary this year (read about it here).

- opening my window early in the morning to see a man standing in it staring at me. hi construction man. I loved when you drilled into the wall right outside my window for a solid 4 hours while I did homework.

- listening to two guys on the train talk about how they just got out of jail earlier in the day. please don't openly talk about your crimes next to me. I don't want to be a witness to anything.

- being so busy that I haven't made it to the gym once this week. fail.

- having a stranger on the street say "you are really cute" even when you know you're not cause you just came from tennis and had no make up on.

Unbelievable Mentors

Tonight after class, my professor and I stayed a bit and were chit chatting about my program. She filled me in that at the end of our program we get mentored by alumni such as Calvin Klein and Carolina Herrera, to name a few. Yes, they themselves come and mentor us one on one (and they don't even get paid for it, they just want to do it!). I feel like pinching myself. Did I mention I love my school?!

Awkward Encounters

Around 3 a.m. this morning I rolled over and opened my eyes to find my husband staring at me with a huge smile on his face. I was totally caught off guard to see him looking at me at the very moment I opened my eyes. We locked eyes for a solid 5-10 seconds but I was half a sleep and didn't want to address it then, so I just closed my eyes and went back to sleep. It wasn't until we met up for lunch today that we talked about it. We laughed. Agreed it was awkward. But than again, nothing is awkward with us. From his point of view he said it was a little surprising to see me roll over and pop my eyes open so fast and so big. Haha I am sure it wasn't a pretty sight! I love him and our "awkward" moments.

Then this morning I had my fashion model drawing class. In this class we draw real models who are clothed so we can see how the clothes are draping on their bodies. Today I am certain that our "female" model was a tranny. If you are ever unsure if someone is a male or female, try drawing them and you will figure it out real quick. Men have no hips, no curves, nothing. It was way to early for me to have the patience to draw him/her. But he/she still isn't nearly as bad as the model in my life drawing class last week. Think 80 year old, ubber skinny, bald with a patch of neon green hair, yoga lady. Yoga is the key word. The poses would blow your mind.

A Work in Progress

Husband and I have been working on making a "popular" section on my website for the veils that sell the most. We did this because I wanted to have the most popular ones available for a "quick sale" for the bride that simply just wants to buy a veil quickly and not have to worry about measurements for a custom veil. It's still not done but I get so excited when there is progress on my website so check it out here.

On Sunday we both got to speak in our church sacrament meeting about personal revelation, which is a great topic! I think it is amazing how we can all receive personal revelation from God if we are willing and able to listen to that still small voice that speaks to us. Some people like to refer to this voice as intuition but I like to refer to it as the Holy Spirit. Most people pray but do we take time after we pray to just sit and listen? We all talk to God but do we take the time to sit back and see if he has something to say to us? Try doing it today (and always!) it will really make a difference in your life. No Shopping for a Year?

Could you do it? Not buy any clothes for a full year? I will tell you straight up that I know I couldn't do it. Even in my toughest of times financially in my life I have found a way to get a little something here and there. Well today I want to introduce you to a young lady who decided not to shop at all in 2011! Can you believe it? Here is her story...

Hey guys!

The name's Meredith and the blog's yours, mine & ours.

Taylor invited me over today to share a little bit about my fashion and new years resolution of not shopping for myself at all in 2011 (I know, what kind of a woman am I?!).

First off, I'd describe my style as washable cheapskate. Seriously, nothing I own is high maintenance because I have 2 year old boy and I so don't want to have to scrub my clothes by hand since I already have to deal with his stained stuff so often (oxyclean is my BFF).

Also, pretty much everything I wear comes from the freepile/a thrift store/ I got it from a clothes swap/or I made it.

Fancy! Now on to my "no spend 2011" goal. Here's the deal: I'm not shopping for myself all of this year. No thrifting for clothes, no jewelry shopping, no hair dye; nothing. So far it's been a great year and I've only messed up once.

I've enjoyed this year so much I plan to keep my shopping way down next year as well. Honesty I've really liked hosting clothes swaps,swapping things online and making my own clothes (I wish I could go to school for it too like Taylor!).

Not sure if it's for everyone but for me it's been totally doable.

Fear of Fashion or Death?!

So today in class I learned a random statistic. Did you know that people fear wearing the wrong thing more than they fear death? Sounds crazy doesn't it? But when you think about it it makes sense.

One reason I think this is true is because naturally we think about what we are going to wear more than death because we have to get dressed every morning (hopefully we are not thinking about death every morning!) I also think people fear embarrassment and a bad outfit can bring that on, hence why people stress so much about dressing well.

I will be honest and tell you that since going to FIT I think about what I am wearing a lot more. The great thing about going to school with some of the most fashion savy people is they all inspire you with new ideas on how to mix up your own wardrobe. I think we feed a lot off of each other. So what do you think? Be honest ladies, do you stress about what you are going to wear? Do you fear it more than death?

what it was like being here for the 9/11 anniversary...

It was unreal. I wish my writing could really express everything from yesterday. But it can't. I can't explain how heart wrenching it is to walk down the street next to hundreds of people wearing photo pins of their family members they lost in 9/11. It's heart breaking. For years I have seen these family members on T.V. specials about 9/11 but to be walking among them while their hearts are heavy really makes it so much more real. My heart was always heavy about 9/11 but it's on a whole new level now that I am here. I am grateful I got to experience this anniversary first hand.

There were police officers every where you looked. I have never seen anything like it. Since we literally live next to Ground Zero security was so tight by our apartment that I almost couldn't even get into my own place. They checked everyone's I.D. and since James and I have yet to get a NY license (opps!), we had to get a bill from our place to prove we lived there. Guess what I am doing this week? Going to the DMV!

When we went to church in the morning we heard some members of our church share their personal experiences of what it was like on the morning of 9/11. It was so amazing to hear their stories. One man even brought papers and broken glass he collected from the WTC. All the messages shared how unified we became that day as Americans. It brings tears to my eyes. It didn't matter who you were, where you were from or your age, everyone really came together. One man said "the good that is within all of us came to the surface that day." Could you imagine what the world would be like if we lived everyday like that?

The skies of 9/11

The events of the day ended right outside our apartment with people standing around the firehouse listening to music. They ended with Auld Lang Syne and I thought it was the perfect song to end the day with. It symbolized forgiveness and a new start and was so touching to hear people cheering. We are a strong country and while others may try to knock us down we will always rise. September 11th, forever in our hearts.

Fashion Night Out

Thursday night was the 3rd annual Fashion Night Out here in NYC. It was my first FNO and I was really excited. But to be honest it wasn't all it was hyped up to be for me. All the places I wanted to go were exclusive parties. Lame. I think had I gone down to SoHo I might have liked it more with stores like J Crew and Anthropologie. I think I just had to high of expectations. Overall I was let down. But regardless it is always fun getting dressed up to go out with husband!

We did however go to Theory and Michael Kors who I both love. I want another Michael Kors watch. They are so beautiful!

James and I went for a walk the other night and got kind of emotional when we saw the tribute lights for 9/11 right by our apartment. It's unreal living down here by Ground Zero and meeting people that were directly effected by 9/11. I am grateful to be here at this time. I have never been so proud to be an American. We are blessed.

I can't believe who I met tonight!

Tonight was amazing. After class I ran into my school bookstore and to my surprise I saw that Susan Ashbrook was there signing copies of her new book! Who is Susan Ashbrook you ask? A genius. No really. A fashion genius. You could say that she is one of the pioneers in creating the concept of celebrity product placement. What do I mean by this? She basically came up with the idea that if you put something on a celebrity it will sell! Susan recognized that actors, models and dancers have agents to make them successful, but what did fashion designers have? That's where Susan came in. She was basically an agent for fashion designers. She started her company Film Fashion and represented everyone big to small and helped launch their brands by getting their clothes on celebrities. Genius.

The bookstore was dead tonight (lucky for me!) so I got the pleasure of talking with Susan one on one for a long while. I struck gold right? One on one time, priceless! She was so sweet too and has so many fun stories to share. Like how she helped launch Monique Lhuillier's career when she got Britney Spears to wear one of her wedding dresses when she got married. And Monique didn't even know who Britney Spears was at the time. Or did you know that Ralph Lauren was one of Susan's first clients? Oh yeah. This women has worked with everyone.

Anyways, it was so great getting to talk with her. We talked about Taylor Morgan and she gave me some really good feedback about how much she likes my name (she said it sounds like a bridal designer!) and how she loved my font. She even complimented my outfit. Love her for that. I got a copy of her book "Will Work for Shoes" that she signed saying Taylor, I can't wait to see a celeb in your designs!

The book is a "how to" book about the business of product placement and how to get your brand out there as a designer. Perfect book for me to read. I started reading it on the train ride home and already can't put it down. I highly recommend it to you fashionistas out there!

A Rainy Day in the City

Almost over night it has turned into fall here in the city. Temperatures are in the 60's today! I kind of love it though because it allows for layering! And who doesn't love layering in the fall?!

On the subway ride home tonight I couldn't find any song I wanted to listen to on my ipod so I turned on a talk from a church leader in my church. Needless to say it was exactly what I needed to hear and I found myself tearing up (probably looking like a crazy) on the train. My favorite thing he said was this:

"You must learn to walk a few steps ahead into the darkness and then the light will turn on and go before you."

Sometimes we have to take leaps of faith in life to go after what we feel to be true and right. And that may require us to walk into the darkness before the light can be turned on. But remember leaps of faith always pay off one way or another. We never see the end in the beginning but know that if you knew the end every time you wouldn't even hesitate leaping. So go! Take the leap of faith you need to in your life right now. We all have them. So go leap!

Patternmaking

First and foremost, all of my professors are amazing! They are so brilliant and really know how to teach. I already love them.

I drew my first nude model. This was very new to me, I have never drawn a life like drawing of anyone. I always draw funky fashion croquis. But I actually think I will enjoy it.

I am constantly buying more and more art supplies. Luckily I already owned 90% of everything but it still requires a lot of supplies.

I am going to be working at NYC Fashion Week this up coming weekend. dream. come. true.

FIT alumni are amazing. And I love that the school never talks about who went there. They are never trying to impress anyone even though they are the most impressive fashion school in our country. Seriously.

I have met some really nice people so far and look forward to the friendships I will make here. I love meeting new people.

The position for my new gay best friend is still open but I have some prospects.

The students dress really well or really unique. Either way I love that people do their thing. I wish I could take pictures but FIT has a strict no photo policy.

Which leads me to my next point, no photos allowed! It sucks cause I wish I could show you inside FIT but they are so protective of everyone's work, which I can appreciate.

So far I am on top of all my work but it has only been one week so I know it will get much more intense but I am determined to stay on top of everything. Which is easier to do when you are married cause you are not looking for a social life as much.

Patternmaking

Outside of school, next Sunday marks the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. I feel that the mood is different right now in the city. Maybe it's not and it's just me, but I already feel the mood changing for the anniversary. I feel like you can tell it's on everyone's mind.

I also live right next to Ground Zero. And when I say right next, I mean right next. This is a view out of our window that shows one of the new buildings being built at Ground Zero....

It feels so much more real being right here by where it all happened. Sometimes I cannot believe that such a thing could happen in our country but I love how united it has made us as Americans. I pray that this anniversary will be a safe one. Always count your blessings because they are many. On this 9/11 remember those that we lost and remember those you have. It is such a blessing to have your loved ones. It is also such a blessing to be an American and I am proud to be one.

At Last...

My love has come along! Okay, so my real love (husband) has already come along but FIT is my close second love. Today was my first day at FIT and I am just in awe of my new school. I cannot even express how I feel. To be walking the same halls as some greats such as Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Amsale, Reem Acra, Carolina Herrera, and many many more who studied there, is such an honor. FIT is a very selective school and I am so grateful for the opportunity to study here. It really is a dream come true. I thank God every single day and night for helping me make my dreams come true.

FIT already feels like home and I know so many great things are going to come from this. I feel like me deciding to go to FIT is a turning point in my life that someday I will look back on and say, "yeah going to FIT was the best thing I ever did, it was the key to my success."

This was my first lesson from FIT today: "No fashion magazine is sold in a grocery store. You have to know where to get the real ones, and trust me, it's not in a grocery store."

Aww, I cannot wait for what's to come! Are you ready? Cause I am going to make some amazing things for YOU ladies!!

We Survived Hurricane Irene!

This past weekend we had a mandatory evacuation in our neighborhood here in Manhattan. We live right next to Battery Park and were expecting a lot of flooding. So we headed upstate to our family's house to weather out the storm.

However, thankfully, not much happened. It just felt like a really bad thunder/lightning storm with strong winds. And most of it happened in the middle of the night. Here is the little damage we woke up to upstate...

The power did go out though, which was a total bummer. But it gave James and I a lot of undivided time together. So we went for a walk (well lots of walks this weekend) to see all the damage and to just get out of the house...

I am grateful our city was safe and that we didn't come home to any broken windows. I pray for all those that lost loved ones this weekend along the east coast and hope that everyone recovers from any damage/inconvenience Irene caused you.

Tomorrow I start school at FIT and I am grateful for the time I got to spend with James this weekend before my whole world changes. It's finally here. All the planning, praying, moving, everything leading up to FIT, it's here. Hello NYC fashion world! I am ready for you...

Wow. What a week it has been. I have been sewing veils like a mad woman to get orders done before school starts. I am particularly in love with this new floor length lace veil. I just love lace.

I had orientation this week at my school FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). For those that don't know, I am furthering my education at FIT to help expand Taylor Morgan into the brand I foresee it as. Words cannot express how honored and thrilled I am for the opportunity to study at such an amazing fashion design school. It's going to be great!

And lastly, this hurricane Irene is really throwing off my plans! My Uncle Andrew was suppose to come stay with us this weekend but had to cancel his trip because the hurricane is suppose to be really bad. We live at the tip of Manhattan and its suppose to be the worse part of the city. So Andrew's trip is on hold for now. Come back soon Andrew! So husband and I are preparing for the hurricane by getting the heck out of the city! We are going to stay with our family upstate to be safe. If you are on the east coast, be safe this weekend!

To Grandmother's House We Go...

Okay my "grandmother" would kill me for calling her such a name. She is way to stylish to be a grandmother. But earlier this month I flew out to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she lives on a beautiful horse ranch. My Mom and sister were going to be there to celebrate my Mom's birthday and last minute I flew in to surprise them!

Remember how I said my "Grandmother" is stylish? Well she really is. She is originally from NYC and is the most talented interior designer. Her house was originally my Great Grandparent's house. My Grandpa owns his own construction company, so almost every year they have added on a room or renovated an old one. They are a power couple with his construction and her design.

Everything in my Grandparent's house is for sale. And one of the best benefits as a grandchild is that you can have anything you want for free! And this is no IKEA stuff my friends! I felt like a kid in a candy shop. So the following became mine...

My Grandmother and I really connect through design. I know I have learned so much from her and her style has helped shaped me as a designer today. I am grateful for my stylish "grandmother" (who I call Mamere by the way). Here is a picture of my sister and I with our Grandparent's....

Did I mention how much I love my little sister?! We are almost 14 years apart. She is the sweetest little thing and about freaked when she saw me walk up to my Grandparent's house! It was priceless!

It's that time. The time where going to school at FIT will start taking over my life. I don't start for a week and a half but I have been busy this week getting all my ducks in a row. My schedule is very full. But I am so excited for this opportunity!

I was reminded by a reader about my "goal a day" posts. I have kept my "goal a day" challenge but haven't been blogging about them so today that changes. Today my goal is to recover from this cold I am fighting and update my facebook with pictures from the whole summer. Taking it easy today since I am sick. Hope all of you are feeling better than me. Barbie and Ken

Such a classic pair that we all loved when we were little girls. Well several months ago my girlfriend posted a Barbie silhouette on her facebook that she made in a computer program. I instantly wanted it for my bathroom but I wanted a Ken as well. She didn't have Ken on her program so I decided to draw them myself. I have wanted to do this for months now and finally got around to it last night....

Aren't they cute? They were the perfect pair to finish off our black and white retro bathroom. It was a really fun project and really easy. I just googled "barbie and ken silhouettes" and found ones similar to this (I changed Barbie a bit) and then I just drew them. If you aren't an artist and want them let me know and I can help you out!

The Addams Family

Last night and last minute, husband and I decided to go to The Addams Family Musical on Broadway. It was amazing! Probably the best play I have seen on Broadway. Wicked use to be on top of my list but I think the Addams Family may have replaced it. Don't get me wrong, Wicked is great, but I don't know. There was just something so fresh about The Addams Family.

The beautiful Brooke Shields recently joined the cast and I just loved her! It was so neat to see her so close and we had the pleasure of meeting her after the show. She was so nice.

I have to say though, ms. Wednesday defiantly stole the show. She was by far the most talented singer in the play. I was really impressed by her. Her name is Rachel Potter and she is so talented. Check out her website here.

The whole cast was truly amazing. Roger Rees played the father and did a wonderful job. He was so entertaining. If you are in NYC I highly recommend going to see it. You can get half price tickets at TKTS in Time Square like we did the day of the show. Go see it!

Soul Searching

Lately I have been doing a lot of soul searching. Making sure I am staying on His path for me. I am learning to perfect my patience, which has never been my strong suit. But I am learning there really is beauty in the times you have to just have faith, stay strong and be persistent. Going after what you want is never easy, that's why most people don't do it, but it's worth it. I am trusting in that.

The other night I watched the movie "Soul Surfer." So amazing. I cried the whole time. If you are not familiar with the movie, it's a true story about a professional surfer (who was just a young girl) Bethany Hamilton. She lost her arm to a shark shortly after her career was really picking up. To say the least, it turned her world upside down. But she didn't let such a huge obstacle stop her. She pushed through her pain and learned how to surf with just one arm and eventually accomplished her dream of becoming a professional surfer.

There were times when Bethany wanted to give up and stop surfing all together. But that changed when people started sending fan mail from all over the world. Bethany quickly realized that her experience and story was inspiring thousands to go after things in their own life because of her example. She went back to surfing for them. For the sake of shining hope in other people's lives. And along the way she was also blessed with her biggest dream of becoming a pro surfer.

I watched this movie at such a perfect time. It reminded me to hold on to what I am fighting for and to know that all things are possible with faith. Faith is key. Always give thanks for what you have and remember that He hears you and your prayers will be answered if you just have faith. Are you fighting for what you want?

Lovely Lace

Today I went down to the Garment District. I spent my day buying new laces for my veils. Let's just say I am in love. Pictures of the finished products will be posted later this week. If you like lace, these veils will win your heart over!

Okay, off to cook dinner for husband, followed by a in home movie date night! Love.

New York Minute

This past weekend husband and I decided to be tourist and visit some famous sites in our city, the beautiful Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I was especially excited to visit Ellis Island. I have always loved it and husband had never been there before. First stop was Ms. Liberty...

We got some great shots of our city and James' office building. His office is floor to ceiling glass windows and gives him a beautiful view of the Statue of Liberty.

Next up was Ellis Island! Millions of people can trace their ancestry back here. I find it all so fascinating! I admire all the brave people who sought out for a better life here in America. Their stories are all so inspiring!

I was so impressed by the architecture of the building. Things aren't made like this anymore. If you think about it this was just a big terminal but they still made it beautiful. Now a days it would be so blah. But here, no detail was overlooked.

From 1954 to the early 80's, Ellis Island was like a ghost town. No one ever went there or kept it up. Finally in the early 80's the city decided to turn it into a museum. When they started to clean it they said it was like stepping back in time.

In the Great Hall is a beautiful tiled ceiling. The man who did the ceiling also did the one in Grand Central Station (which is amazing!). Out of the 28,000 tiles only 17 had to be replaced during the renovations! Talk about great craftsmanship.

Whether you live in the city or are just visiting, these places are a must stop! And if you get hungry there are restaurants on both islands. Be sure to bring your cameras!
